Environmental protection

We know and respect that the environment, including fish and wildlife habitat, is of great cultural and commercial importance to the people of northern BC and elsewhere.

We are currently conducting a very thorough assessment of the potential impacts of the construction and operation of our facility. The results will be submitted with our application to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA) and the BC Environmental Assessment Office (BCEAO) along with proposals to mitigate any possible adverse impact that our project may have.

As part of our assessment we have consulted, and will continue to consult with, First Nations, local communities, the port and other groups in the project area.

Environmental Assessment

The Prince Rupert LNG Project’s Environmental Assessment (EA) is underway. Field environmental baseline studies are designed to meet and exceed provincial and federal requirements. These studies enable us to design the project so it minimizes disruptions to wildlife and fish and reduces the environmental footprint.

Our view is that environmental assessments should involve site-specific, detailed surveys that will influence the project’s design, construction and operations. Our environmental surveys will study subjects such as: air and water quality, freshwater and marine fisheries, vegetation, wildlife and habitat, marine mammals and birds, benthic organisms and intertidal and near-shore environments. As of early 2014, work has been conducted on all of these elements, giving us a comprehensive understanding of environmental conditions within and near the project site. Once fieldwork is completed, we will begin detailed analysis of the data collected.

In addition, BG Group is working closely with First Nations and local communities to learn from traditional and local ecological knowledge with the intent of integrating this knowledge in project planning and design.

We are committed to making this LNG facility a development that combines social and economic benefits, while leaving a legacy of environmental stewardship.
